To go or not to go...

...to university?
Most students in thier final year of high school are currently deciding on what to do with thier future. The most likely and taken route of going to university may end up getting you degree to be proud of, but are there other ways of getting good jobs?

Recently a survey completed by top employers stated that only 38% of them will base your job application on your degree, the rest saying experience is more important.
Being a 3rd year myself I feel that university, whilst teaching me some lessons, is quite pointless for those who do not already have a clue what they want to do.

More time in schools should be spent talking to students about not feeling pressured to go to university and instead looking at internships and work experience to then enable them to work out what they want to do. What I'm trying to say is that a working gap year should be incouraged more.

For me sadly after 3 years and £30,000 debt it's a little too late and job prospects look quite slim in this recession! So a rather bleak outlook is facing most students this year, 150,000 of them all getting 2:1-1st's and fighting for the remaining jobs which make university look worthwhile.

To those who are not yet chosen just remember to take time and really decide on what you want to do before making choices. University won't be going anywhere fast, promise.

So yesterday I travelled to London for my 1st day of my last year in uni!
As it's the fashion capital of the UK there was ample street styles to observe and admire.
So here are a few trend-setting items from the high-street:

H+M- One of the best high street companies for all styles and ages. Now even stronger since they've opened thier online store.

Dorothy Perkins- Great for the students as they offer special discount days, otherwise it's 10% off all year round.

Love these trousers, so simple but so smart! Definately a great work/interview trouser.

Today the best menswear collections for this season are being showcased in London.

Lou Dalton kicks off this morning followed by J.W. Anderson. The images of thier collections are shown below. They are the leading designers for men with looks ranging from grungy to very styled.

E Tautz is also showcasing his collection, which features a more styled and sophisticated look for men.

Finally I would like to pay respect to Alexander McQueen, whos memorial was 2 days ago.

Matthew Williamson- This dress is so dreamy, it's a beautiful take on the maxi dress.

David Korma

Paul Smith- This is a beautiful classic dress which has a longevity to it, I think its a great investment.

Winter wear

Burberry Prorsum- Love these thigh-high boots! Gorgeous!

Burberry Prorsum- I'm completely in love with this whole outfit! It is stunning!

Jaeger London- Capes are a must have this season and this is a beautiful one!

Paul Costelloe- This styled jacket is so simple yet so beautiful.

New beginnings

So today is the start of a new take on my blog. As I have no clue on what I want to accomplish I have decided to try out various things that may take my fancy! So here goes!

Here are a few looks I have put together for Autumn. The photos are awful but enjoy!

The Jacket is by zara which I got in the sale at £10!

Festival type gear here, shoes often swapped with wellies! Depends on the english weather though! Shirt is borrowed from boyfriend!

This is one of H+M's new season cape, I fell in love and had to buy it!

I haven't got a big wardrobe but I do try and mix and match what I have got! I can't wait to actually get some money and shop!!!

Smart pill

Students have a huge amount of pressure on top of them, especially during exam time where they are pushed to regurgitate facts and give thier 'peak' performance. Not everyone does how expected, some better some a lot worse.

So it comes as no shock that students have buckled under this pressure and gone and bought smart pills. Originally meant for the ill/disabled in order to increase thier alertness, it is now being used by students. As of yet the side effects on the healthy are unknown.

But what about the student who aren't taking it?

There is the issue of fairness here, and if one student takes it then others may feel like they are being cheated, and so- join in.
The metro are calling for tests prior to the exam to be taken in order to prevent students from taking the pills. Further work is being done on this issue.

As spring comes around, the winds have picked up. New things come along into ones path and others get blown aside, to be forgotten.

I've found myself stuck between the past and present, reaching out, desperately, for the future.
I'm too young to wish my life away, I tell myself I shouldn't.
Whatever happens I'll take it on the chin, try and push through, to come out at a better day.

I only wish or a time of freedom, pure joy and little problems.
I wish to run away to the depths of a jungle or a peak of the mountain, splurge all feelings to them come back renewed.
I miss those days, those uplifting moments.

Sorry for the lack of blogging. I've been kept bust with work and a great read!

Superfreakonomics has to be the best book I've read this year. It encompases prostitues in chicago, why suicide bombers should get life insurance and the first case of monkey prostitution and much more.
It goes into things you thought you minght never want to know but you become glued to it. Its a must read, definatly!

Finally...

...the work has eased off!
Yesterday i had two presentations and an open. Things went better than expected.
One man gave me a rather big headache though, for half an hour he talked about the point of university, why go, why pay?

So it got me thinking, i've always wondered about where that 3000 pounds go. To your teachers? well yes but do you recieve your moneys worth of lectures from them-really? i dont think so!

Also facilities, this is probably the best spent money in my uni, but others i looked at were clearly not.

So where is it going?

Some say library books, but most of ours are donated by old professors. In my opinion that 3000 pounds you spend goes to the bills and wages of everyone involved in uni. You dont really see a return.
Despite uni saying you need to be in all the time, most intelligent people could do thier course at home, especially with things such as blackboard/webct.

The fact that the government wants to increase the cost of uni is disguisting! What will we be paying for next? The holidays of all the employees?

I think its time for proper lectures, no more baby-feeding, im paying to be challenged and to have something in return other than my free morning printing...

pavement allowance

The thing is, pavement allowance has aided many times, it will always be there, seeking a finder.

Global warming- what global warming?

It makes me exhausted listening to the endless amounts of people who will say that its too cold for global warming.
Global warming is an incorrect word for starters. It should be called something else.

Yes globally it will warm, but locally (Northern Hempisphere) it will cool and dramatically at that. Models suggest that Greenland could cool by a huge 10 degrees. This also affects the UK significantly. The problem is media is going about displaying this data incorrectly. Afraid its too complicated or could be badly interpreted they are not divulging the information to the public.

So wrap up warm, invest in those snoods, gloves and all things fluffy because it will officially get colder.

We now have a new syndrome to deal with in our society, Avatar depression syndrome. Apparently moviegoers are coming away feeling let down with their own reality after seeing the perfection and the pristine beauty of the planet Pandora. A fan forum thread on how to cope with “Pandora being intangible” received thousands of messages. Some even contemplating suicide.

The quality of this film is highly impressive and you are transported into this perfect place which us humans shit on again...
What has to be said is why are people, instead of killing themselves and feeling down, not get up be INSPIRED to go out and do your bit to save what we have left?

Go and see the rainforest, do what you can to save it, many people doubt our ability as a single person to do anything but if you get up and go out there you'll find that nobody wants to live like we are really. A world where everything can live in harmony will never really be achieved, but we can get close. We are humans, we were born to make mistakes. Live with it.

For now just do something selfless, help the helpless. Stop putting crap into the Earth and most of all stop killing yourselves and feeling so down in the dumps. You only live once :)

A day in the life of...

...an East London university student.

A while back I had a crazy day which I thought I'd share with you...

On my 2 mile walk to lectures (I know, its torture in this weather!) everything was as a normal day. When I arrived in lectures all went well (boring but ok). Its what happened when I was leaving the university that makes me believe everything happens in threes!

On my way back a man collapsed on bow road, running towards him I put my mums skills to test (she's a nurse) with loads of onlookers me and a few others managed to get him to hospital ok. As I brushed myself off and began walking towards home the road suddenly went quiet. A man in a wheelchair started to come towards me head on and began to shout
"I'm going to get you" whilst putting his hand down his jacket as if to pull something out.
In that moment I began to leg it, literally walking faster than my legs could carry me!

Once away, I caught my breath and turned the corner into my street, as school had just ended there were loads of kids, but today there were no police. As I was walking I got caught up in a fight and I was the one being pushed into the wall. In my countrified way of dealing with situations I thought of ignoring that it happened but instead gave them a long mean stare lol.

Finally arriving home after such an eventful time I am a believer in everything; good or bad, can happen in threes!

Well back at university and with the freezing weather the house doesn't normally get above 10 degrees! It really is freezing here! BTW ignore my horrible spelling mistakes etc, constantly traveling to and from London is really exhausting!!
There has been no more snow here in London and the last bits of slush are disappearing now.

I've been re-arranging rooms and doing loads of work since I've got back. Trying to start afresh for the new year is taking a lot more effort than I first thought!

I'll upload some more pictures as soon as I get used to this new computer!
